Founding Scientist - Molecular Biology
Our mission:
At Temporal, we have a goal of enabling farmers to maximize their production by protecting their crops from the tyranny of Mother Nature.
A farmer's economic outcome is defined by their crop yield, but they lack the tools to protect their growing crops from the single greatest driver of underproduction: the weather. Weather-related underproduction creates over $1.1T and $50B in unseen economic crop losses globally and in the US, respectively. At Temporal Ag, we are tapping into the plant's existing biological machinery to provide farmers with tools that help prime their plants so they are ready to thrive in the face of unfavorable weather.
What you will do:
We are seeking a Founding Scientist, with strong expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry, to join the founders as the first hire at Temporal Agriculture. This individual will have a unique opportunity to shape and drive the research and development function at an early stage start-up. The research will involve innovative CRISPR-Cas vector design, molecular cloning, CRISPR library preparation and scale up, bacterial transformation and growth as well as genetic and epigenetic marker assay development. Additionally, this scientist will be a part of the design and data collection during in-field technology deployment and validation, truly getting to experience the product hands-on from start to finish.
We’d love to hear from you if:
- You are passionate about the opportunity to build a technology that can revolutionize farmers’ ability to respond to a changing environment
- You have a PhD in molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant genetics, biochemistry, synthetic biology, or related field
- You have strong expertise in RNA/DDNA work, genome and/or epigenome editing, gene expression analysis, gene construct delivery, Next Generation Sequencing, PCR and qPCR assay design
- You have a demonstrated ability to develop, optimize, and scale lab processes
- You are comfortable with bioinformatics code development, PacBio/Nanopore sequencing, ChIP seq experience, bacterial culture and strain maintenance experience
- You’re excited about the opportunity to get in on the ground level of a biotechnology start-up with founders experienced in the agriculture technology space
- You’re extremely comfortable with being uncomfortable and have a knack for finding clarity in ambiguity
- You are willing and able to relocate to sunny Santa Barbara, California to work with us in our lab and are comfortable with up to 20% travel time (within the US)
Why you should join us:
- You’ll have the exciting opportunity to be the first full-time hire at a growing startup company, enabling you to be a crucial contributor to Temporal Agriculture’s technology development and culture definition.
- You’ll get to work every day with folks who are incredibly passionate about driving technological innovation that can change the world.
